Kelli Lardi is an attorney who originally joined our team as a law clerk at Gwendolyn J. Sterk and the Family Law Group in December of 2015. Kelli has had a strong interest in family law throughout her law school career, which was solidified after taking an advanced family law class, as well as participating in the family law practicum while at law school. She also participated in the Domestic Violence Clinic during her time at Valparaiso, where she honed her skills in client communication and was able to obtain experience advocating for her clients before a judge.
What do clients look for in an attorney?
I think clients look for someone who believes in him or her, as well as their “cause.” Clients want someone who is on their side. Even though they may not realize it when looking for an attorney, clients need someone who can and will bring them back down to reality when necessary.
Why did you choose family law?
When I was in middle school, my parents went through a divorce. It was very amicable, and I was never brought into court or even made aware of the proceedings. I only knew my parents were getting divorced. Now that I’m a family law attorney, I realize how lucky I was to have parents who were able to divorce amicably. It isn’t always possible, but I want to help parties settle amicably in order to help avoid children being dragged into divorce proceedings with all the drama can ensue.
What is your greatest fulfillment as a family law attorney?
Hearing clients say “Thank you, that’s all I wanted” at the end of a case. It makes me feel really good when I am able to help clients achieve their goal. Sometimes, family law can be stressfull due to high emotions. When clients come back after their case is finished to thank you for everything you did for them, it makes it all worth while.
Who is your hero?
My mother and grandmother are my heroes. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the two of them. They showed me how to be a strong and independent woman, and they have always been some of my biggest cheerleaders.
What is your favorite quote?
“When you have a bad day, a really bad day, try and treat the world better than it treated you.” I like this quote a lot, because it’s a little reminder to myself not to take things out on others when I’ve had a bad day. Rather than continuing the negativity, I’d rather turn it into something positive.
What do you do in your spare time?
In what little spare time I do have, I can be found baking, playing video games with my fiancé, spending time outside, or shopping at local markets—my favorite is one in my hometown on the second Saturday of every month called Three French Hens Market!
How do you like working with Gwendolyn J. Sterk and the Family Law Group, P.C.?
I love it! Our practice really emphasizes empowering our clients in aspects outside of their divorce. I wholeheartedly believe that our holistic approach helps our clients heal and empower themselves in one of the more difficult times in their lives.
What is a fun fact about you?
While attending a residence life leadership conference in college, I was part of the largest group of people doing the Robot in one place. I’m not sure if we still hold the world record for largest group of people doing the Robot in one place, but it was still pretty fun.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
My favorite holiday is Christmas because I love finding the perfect gift for friends and family members. I also really enjoy all the baking and cooking, as well as spending time with loved ones! Decorating the Christmas tree is also my favorite holiday activity.
If you could be any animal, what animal would you be and why?
I would be a dog. All they really do is eat, sleep, and play. It sounds like a pretty easy life. Plus, most people like dogs. It’s an added bonus that they’re cute. (If I can choose what breed of dog I’d be, I would definitely be a corgi—they’re my favorite!)
